What is Network Ping, and How Does It Work?

You must have noticed Ping in your network speed test. Have you ever wondered what it stands for and how it is calculated? The ping tool is used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network.

What is Network Ping? And How is it calculated?

Network Ping means the time it takes for small data set to be transmitted from your device to a server on the internet and back to the device again. It is measured in milliseconds(ms). Ping amounts of 100 ms and below are average for most broadband connections.

Ping can be used as a quick discovery tool. Since virtually any network-connected device will respond to a ping, an ongoing range of addresses, for example, would allow an administrator to find all the attached devices in that range, regardless of the type of device or operating system.

4. Monitoring

Ping can be used to monitor the network availability of devices. A ping command running as the scheduled task can offer rudimentary polling of any networked computer or device without the need to install any additional software agents, and without the need to open additional ports. The standard ping sensor runs ping commands in the background. These can be configured to run at specific intervals, or in response to another event.

6. Security

Careful analysis of ping site replies may yield additional information such as which operating system the target is running, where the machine is located.

Good and Bad Ping

A Ping from the internet that amounts to 100 ms and below are average for most broadband connections. In gaming, any amount below ping of 20 ms is considered exceptional, and " low ping" amounts between 50 ms and 100 ms range from very good to average, while a ping of 150 ms or more is less desirable and deemed "high ping". A high ping can make you experience delays in your gaming such as lagging or freezing. An acceptable ping is around 40-60 ms mark or lower. A speed of over 100 ms shows a noticeable delay and over 170 ms, some games will reject your connection entirely. If you have, for eg 10ms ping, your gameplay will seem faster, with respect to playing with 100ms. A  router ping test can help improve latency but only to a certain degree. It can improve the connection from your ISP's modem connection to your computer or console, either over Wi-Fi or with a more reliable ethernet connection.

Analyzing Ping as a technology

Ping isn't just a measure of the latency between your computer and a remote device. Ping can help you spot packet loss. If you get the message 'request timed out' this would indicate some ping packets either weren't being received by the remote computer or the relies weren't reaching you. If you are experiencing trouble while browsing, the ping command can help identify packet loss. You can also use a traceroute to see the path your data packets take and identify where the loss occurs.

Achieving the lowest ping is ideal for using the internet. Even if the packet travels over fiber optic cables, it cannot travel faster. Ping has been able to provide the best facilities possible for the customers in terms of efficiency.
