Internet of Things - Need and Future
The future is indeed technology-driven. The motive of technology is to create a world that leaves everybody awestruck with the latest innovation and make the impossible a viable option. Updating and upgrading are vital and so the advent of the Internet of Things seems to be the best option to revolutionize the whole world.
What is the Internet of Things?
The internet of things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, or people that are laden with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. The objects are embedded with sensors, software, and technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet.
Internet of Things can create information about connected objects, analyze them and make decisions, which means it is much smarter than the internet. it aims at creating a rapidly growing network of connected objects that are able to collect and exchange data. Cars, lights, refrigerators, and other appliances can all be connected through IoT.
Applications of IoT
The IoT involves four main components: Devices, Connectivity, Platform, and Application. These are the foundation of every IoT solution. with the passage of time, one will be easily able to see its varied impact on almost everything.
The process to make common things and objects smart can be done using many sources, such as: Radiofrequency, Internet, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Bluetooth. The exchange of information can be done between people and the object or between two objects.
It can have varied applications due to being diversified. Its applications are:
1. Smart Cities:
Smart cities need the use of Machine learning and the use of IoT to process information collected by sensors to improve quality of life.
It helps to investigate the quality of product to real-time optimizing to have good marketing.
It helps in managing vehicular traffic contributing to smart cities. It will need less deployment of police and many things can be managed automatically like traffic lights, smart parking, CCTV, etc.
Some schools use IoT networks to create different programs for severe weather threats, intruders, and other security risks. It also enables energy alert buttons in classrooms or teachers to take action to keep students safe.
Smart farms are the future. it offers farmers the possibility to access detailed knowledge about the soil. Information regarding Soil moisture, acidity level, nutrients help farmers alo
Crucial Layers of IoT
There are 6 Layers/Levels of IoT which are mentioned below:
1. Perception Layer:
This layer forms the physical design of IoT. It has the main function of transforming analog signals into digital form or vice versa. It comes with sensors to detect physical parameters, Actuators to convert electrical signals into physical actions, and with machines and devices.
2. Connectivity Layer:
The communication takes place either by TCP or UDP/IP stack and second act as a link between LAN/ WAN thus providing a path for information to pass through multiple protocols. Wi-Fi, Ethernet , Bluetooth is good for connectivity.
3. Edge Layer:
It can process and analyze the information close to the source as much as possible. All the procedures take place for the IoT network in these layers. It saves time and resources resulting in improved performance.
4. Processing Layer:
It captures, stores, and processes data for further requirements in from the large data for application to optimize the procedures. . In the data accumulation stage, the data comes from various sources at various speeds with the other as Data Abstraction in which selected data is taken out
5. Application Layer:
Data is processed and analyzed to gather business intelligence. It has device control and monitoring services, Analytics solutions built with machine learning and artificial intelligence.
6. Business Layer:
Once data is procured it is valuable if it applies to the strategy and planning of the business. Every business has specific goals and objectives that it wants to accomplish by gathering intelligence from data.
Privacy and Security Concerns
Despite many advantages, the interconnectedness presents a substantial challenge to enterprises in terms of grave security risks from unmonitored and unsecured devices connected to networks. There are many security and privacy concerns when it comes to IoT. As the interaction comes at a certain cost which can be a loophole in this dynamic technology. The challenges are:
- Weak password protection remains an issue
- There is a lack of an update mechanism in it.
- The data protection is insufficient.
- Poor IoT device management.
- The skill gap for IoT is immense.
Features of IoT and its need
The IoT works on certain on the following core features:
It refers to establish a proper connection between all things of IoT to IoT platform, it may be server or cloud. It also needs highspeed messaging between the devices and the cloud to enable reliable, secure, and bi-directional communication.
The real-time analysis of collected data is used to build effective business intelligence.
Various models are integrated for a better experience.
4. Artificial Intelligence:
It makes things smart and enhances life through the use of data.
The sensor used detects and measures the change in environment and reports on their status. It brings passive network to active network.
6. Active Engagement:
It makes connected technology, product, or services to active engagement between each other.
7. End Point Engagement:
It is important to be the endpoint management of all the IoT systems or else the whole system can be a complete failure.
IoT connects our world together. It tries to establish advanced connectivity. the benefits of IoT have changed the approach to use devices in the workplace. In this digital landscape devices, machines and objects can automatically transfer the data through a network effectively 'talking' with each other in real-time. Thus with time, it can be a game changer in the field of technology and modernization.
Relevance and the Future of IoT
The future of IoT is limitless. The potential is not just in enabling billions of devices simultaneously but leveraging the huge volume of actionable data which can automate diverse business processes. This can allow humans to interact in real time over great distances- both with each other and with machines. it has the power to enable new opportunities within remote learning, surgery, repair and many other domains.
IoT has a lot of potential to make our lives comfortable and better. It has diverse applications whether it is Heath, Traffic management, Agriculture, Hospitality, or any other field. it is a leading path to the smart world.
